Mexico authorities arrested the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, according to BBC confirmed a source from the presidency.

The news was ahead in the social network Twitter the president, Enrique Peña Nieto: "Mission accomplished. I have I want to inform Mexicans Joaquin Guzman Loera has been arrested," he wrote in hisEPN account.

Hours later, the president made a brief statement read from the National Palace in which he congratulated the security forces involved without giving details of the operation.

According to the account of the local media, El Chapo was captured on Friday morning in a motel in the town of Los Mochis.

The place had come after El Chapo escaped through a sewer of a shootout with the Mexican Navy in which five "aggressors" were killed, according to official figures.

Transfer to City

Shortly after the arrest, El Chapo Guzman was introduced in the Navy aircraft taking off from Los Mochis headed for Mexico City.He is waiting at the airport in the capital, where security was tightened in two hangars, that of the Navy and the Attorney (Prosecutor) General of the Republic (PGR).

Legally the detainee must be handed over to prosecutors who will apply a medical examination, and then be sent to a prison which is not known until now what it was. El Chapo, however, has escaped two maximum security prisons.

One issue that has yet to be answered is whether the Mexican authorities will accede to the extradition request of the United States.

Operation in Los Mochis

In a statement published Friday in the morning before the tweet of Peña Nieto, the Navy reported the operation in Los Mochis.According to the statement, the action started by a citizen complaint about the presence of armed men in a house.
